What does it mean if someone calls you a "cockroach" or "vermin"?

  1. A 'cockroach' is a person who spoils the good name of the civilization around him. He is, while not necessarily an evil himself, a reminder of all that is disgusting to those around him. In one way or another, he's useless, feeding on the refuse of others, too caught up in some gargantuan mechanical system to strike out and make a name for himself. He's a person who has no interest in leaving the world a better place for his children; rather, he just wants to ensure his own comfort.

  2. When I think of someone being called a cockroach, I think they are being called a dirty or horrible human being. Someone who you don't want to be around because they make you upset or uncomfortable. When people see cockroaches they try to avoid them or make them go away, so if someone is called a cockroach the person probably is not wanted and avoided by a lot of people or a certain group of people. It can also means the person spoils something going on or an event. Over all if you are being called a cockroach it is a negative comment.

  3. When someone calls you a "cockroach" or "vermin" it is never a good thing. That is because they are basically saying that you are a pest. The definition of vermin is "various small animals or insects that are destructive, annoying, or injurious to health" (thefreedictionary.com.) These words come with very negative connotations, as many people do not typically like vermin. When using such terms, the other person is implying that you are nuisance, highly offensive, and/or an obnoxious, irritating person.

  5. If you were called a vermin it might mean that you are a pest or a nuisance. Vermin is used negatively, perhaps towards someone that you loathe and consider disgusting. To be a vermin might also mean that you are someone with a disease or that you are an animal that is in the way of humans and use up resources. Vermin can also be used to describe inferior people or unwanted groups. The term vermin is derived from the Latin word "vermis", which means worm.

  6. A vermin by definition is a disgusting animal usually of small size, appears commonly and is difficult to control. It is also used to describe a person that is obnoxious. To be a vermin means to be some what of a pest. A vermin is every where which means they are not that unique and since they are hard to control, there is a possibility that they work by their own ways and time. Vermin's can be quite detructive.

  7. In the book metamorphosis the first line says "One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin. The definition of vermin is various small animals or insects, such as rats or cockroaches, that are destructive, annoying, or injurious to health. If someone was called "cockroach" or a "vermin", I think its an insult. I think they are saying that person is dirty. If someone called you one of those names, I think they are trying say that you are worthless or that they are better than you. Or they are saying you're annoying and don't like to be around them. They might be calling you disgusting and that you make them feel uncomfortable around you. Overall being called either of these is definitely and insult or negative comment.

  8. If someone called you a cockroach, it is usually taken with negative connotation. That person is probably thinks of you as a pest, or disgusting. When you hear cockroach or vermin you usually think of a wild animal or creature that is harmful to others. Vermin’s are not wanted in farms because they destroy the crops or carry diseases. If someone were to call someone a vermin, I think they would be referring to them as moochers who eat off of people or make a terrible time for the rest of the people around you. Also when I hear the word cockroach, I think of a nasty, unwanted insect that I want to step on. Overall, I would not want to be called a cockroach or a vermin because that would mean that I am a pest to those around me or I am not wanted where I am.

The term "vermin" is loosely used to describe filthy pests or insects. In the first lines of "The Metamorphosis", it tells that when Gregor Samsa woke one morning, he had turned into a horrible vermin. There are two ways of interpreting this. One, it can be interpreted that Gregor Samsa has really become a monstrous vermin/cockroach. However, if one continues on reading at least until the end of the first chapter, one will find that there is a completely different interpretation in the mist. A separate definition of vermin is "people perceived as despicable and causing problems for the rest of society". Gregor Samsa had woke up late for the train, and therefore late for work. If we interpret the text in an entirely different perspective, we see Gregor Samsa as someone who had given up on work and lazing about while causing problems for his family and for his employer. Both definitions of vermin give a negative connotation, because both describe a horrible pest that causes trouble for the rest of society.

  10. The cockroach is defined as a beetle-like insect with long antennae and legs. In "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka, cockroach is used along with other descriptive words to depict the appearance of Gregor, the character. To be called a vermin is to be named a pest or harmful insect. Both words have a negative connotation, describing the horrific state in which Gregor is in. He is portrayed as a beastly, repulsive, disgusting creature that is avoided or not wanted around. If one is described as a "cockroach" or "vermin" it is quite clear that others are not fond of this individual.

  11. I think to be called a "cockroach" or a "vermin" is just another way of telling someone that they are a monster or overall disgusting. To be called a vermin is not exactly a compliment. A vermin can also refer to an obnoxious person or such persons collectively. In an animal sense, a vermin is something that preys upon game. This specific term of vermin could have been used as a resemblance as to why Gregor Samsa had turned into a bug. There usually is only negative connotations of these two words. By using vermin, Kafka is able to give an image to the readers as to what kind of person Samsa had turned into. Although the word vermin refers to negative connotations, it is a powerful adjective to describe Samsa. Samsa is alienated from the rest of his family not only because he has been transformed, but he IS "monstrous!"

  12. The opening sentence of Frank Kafka’s “Metamorphosis” is “One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin.” Vermin is defined as a “noxious or troublesome animal”. Vermin can also be used to describe obnoxious or loathsome people. When someone calls someone a “cockroach” or “vermin” it usually has a negative connotation. Cockroaches are insects many people despise and most people do all they can to avoid them. Therefore, when people tend to avoid “cockroach” or “vermin” people because they are not pleasant people to be around. In “Metamorphosis” Gregor wakes up as a vermin and once his family sees him in that state, they quickly try to avoid him.

  13. • Definition of Vermin: A vermin is a wild mammal and birds that are believed to be harmful to crops, farm animals, or game, or that carry disease, examples are foxes, rodents, and insect pests.
    • Definition of Cockroach: A cockroach is a beetle like insect with long antennae and legs, feeding by scavenging. Several tropical species have become establishes worldwide as pest in homes and food service establishments.
To say someone is a cockroach or a vermin means that they are harmful or they are scavengers. It could also mean that they irritate people by being where they don’t really necessarily need to be. Another thing that it could mean is that the people around this specific person find him or her somewhat disgusting. This person is not necessarily bad it’s just that society finds him something to go against.

  14. I think that when someone is called a cockroach, it most nearly means that they are gross, dirty, or abominable. They are unwanted or they are some type of pest. Its definitely a negative thing to call someone because by definition a cockroach is a type of insect that you usually see in places where it is not cleaned properly or where there might be any type of food source available. Cockroaches and vermins are very very similar. They both seem to be pests because they are creatures that tend to find their way into places with food and they spread bacteria or sometimes diseases because of unsanitary places that they have been.

  15. A vermin is by definition an animal species, which regards pests that are connected with carrying diseases. This word comes from the Latin word “vermis” which means worm
A cockroach by definition is somewhat a beetle-like insect with legs and long antennas. There are a variety of different species for a cockroach. This insect is usually around your household and even in your household.
So practically this word would is referring to an intruder, they are lcated in places which they are not wanted. A vermin brings among harm to crops. Using this type of word for someone is very negative towards the person whom they are calling a “pest.”

  16. If someone were to call you a cockroach or a vermin they mean it in a negative connotation. They are saying that you are an unpleasant, obnoxious, irritating, dirty human. When people see cockroaches they are disgusted by them so they try to push them away. If someone is calling you a cockroach they are saying that you are an irritating, gross person that they do not want to be around.

  17. According to Merriam Webster dictionary, a cockroach is “any of an order or suborder of chiefly nocturnal insects including some that are domestic pests.” Basically a cockroach is a bug that comes out usually at night and can’t get rid of easily. Being called a cockroach is saying that someone is a pest and should go away, although they cannot get rid of very easily. It is an insult to say that someone is a cockroach because it is implied that they should not be around and cause mischief to others around them.

  18. In the book "The Metamorphosis" Franz Kafka starts off with his main character Gregor Samsa, waking up only to find himself transformed into a vermin. In my eyes, a vermin is seen as a low end creature that is filthy and disgusting. An example of a vermin are cockroaches. Cockroaches are bugs that feed off the scraps of leftover food, and are usually seen as a sign of uncleanliness. If I were to be called a vermin, I would be very offended because that means that people see me as a disgusting, impulsive, and horrible creature. Calling anyone a vermin just shows the lack of humanity some people have towards others.

  19. According to the opening line in "The Metamorphosis", Gregor Samsa wakes up to find himself "transformed.. into a horrible vermin." Called to be a vermin is expressed with a negative connotation. Vermin is defined, according to Merriam Webster, as a small animal that is harmful and difficult to control. On the other hand a cockroach is a beetle-like insect with long antennae and legs, feeding by scavenging. When someone calls you a vermin or a cockroach they are probably referring that you seem to be very annoying and they choose not to do anything with you.

  20. The English word vermin has the negative connotation of a pest or dirty creature. When I think of the word, I think of a bug or cockroach. When vermin is used to describe a person, I think the person is filthy, like a nuisance, or like an outcast. Vermin are like little creepy-crawly insects that should be squashed and killed or gotten rid of.

  21. The words vermin, bug, or cockroach are almost always used as negative descriptions of a person. These creatures are known to take food from houses, spread disease, and are unwanted in the houses of people. Because of this, people tend to resent vermin and think negatively about them. To call a person a vermin means they probably mooch off of the work and/or hospitality of others, and are not wanted. These people are seemingly doing more harm than good in the lives of other people.

Gregor Samsa fits a more literal translation of the word “bug” or “vermin”. Though he actually transformed into a large bug, the description of his life previously to that could be compared with this phrase “vermin”. According to the chief clerk, Gregor had been slacking off at work, and there were even rumors that he had been stealing money. On top of this, the clerk comes to find him very late for work and still lounging in bed. This makes him look like even more of a vermin because it appears that he is doing badly in his job.

  22. When someone calls you a 'cockroach' they are saying that you have are a successful race, have an amazing stomach, and can move very fast! They are saying that you have the superhuman abilities of being able to eat anything organic, be it decomposing or not. You are strong, and have a resilient armour on your back. Congratz, you can fly too! That surely is a superhuman power. You can also climb walls and hang upside down by your super adhesive feet easily. Since you are one of the oldest of your race, they are saying that you are extremely capable of adapting to new environments.

Also, when people call you a cockroach, they are also saying you have a smart butt! Your brain is located there. If you get decapitated, you can still survive for up to 3 weeks! You are extremely enduring, for if you get stomped on a bunch of times, you can still get up and crawl away! You are extremely fast for your size and can also survive a nuclear bomb. Your radiation absorption is up to 15 times the absorption of the average human!

So when someone calls you a cockroach, make sure to thank them for all their compliments. However, do not get too cocky, because even though you have traits of a superhuman, you should always stay humble and modest.

  23. The dictionary definition of vermin is "a noxious, objectional, or disgusting animal." This word is not only used to name creatures like bugs or rodents, however. Today, the word "vermin" is also used to describe people, implying that they are lowly and crass. For example, when discussing his political opponents, Aneurin Bevan labeled them "lower than vermin." Using such a phrase when referring to other human beings suggests that they are below yourself and even below the most lowly and base of animals. Perhaps this labeling carries on into the storyline of "Metamporphosis", where Franz Kafka presents a character named Gregor. Gregor works hard to support his family and seems to care for them greatly. However, the fact that Franz Kafka, in the first sentence of his book, explains that Gregor wakes up to find himself metamorphasized into a human-sized vermin suggests that some of Gregor's characteristics, while unbeknownst to us, are low and objectionable. In the midst of Franz's story he seems to suggest that there is an underlying negative side to a boy who, on the surface, seems only patient and good-intentioned.

  24. The first line in "Metamorphosis" says: "One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams,he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin." In the Merriam-Webster dictionary, vermin means a small common harmful or objectionable animals or an offensive person. If someone calls another person a vermin, they are saying that the other person is disgusting, a nuisance, or a monster. By calling a person a vermin/cockroach, a person is saying that the other person is small, useless, annoying. That is how I would see and feel if someone were to call me a cockroach/vermin

  27. To be called "vermin" would be offensive and insulting. The word itself means pests like cockroaches or rats that eat or damage our food. However, when someone calls you a "vermin," it means you are of the lowest in society, like trash. To them, you are someone that is worthless to the community as well as bothersome. By calling someone a vermin, the person probably feels they are more important or better than the other person in some way.

  28. If someone were called a "cockroach" or "vermin", they would be saying that someone is irritating or obnoxious (audioenglish.net). A good way to describe this would be, “a person that causes harm to others.” Many people would probably be offended by this negative remark. Another connotation would be “dirty”. This could potentially mean that one is shameful or unpleasant. This clearly depicts Gregor in his unsettling situation.

  29. According to Merriam Webster, the definition of a vermin would be a "small common harmful or objectionable animal (as lice or fleas) that are difficult to control." In other words to be called a vermin would be described as something of a nuisance and very disgusting in which no one would want to be around or have to deal with. With cockroaches, the same negative connotations would apply because they are considered pests who carry diseases and could cause harm. Gregor Samsa in Metamorphosis had awoken as literally a monstrous vermin or creature-like animal, this could be a reference as to Samsa himself and who he had turned out to become. Someone who is destructive, annoying and not very wanted, possibly by his family or his work which gives us a negative impression on who Gregor may be because Kaftka referred to his transformation as being a vermin.

  30. If someone calls you a “cockroach” or “vermin,” they never mean anything good nor are they complimenting you. In “The Metamorphosis,” Kafka uses the German word “Ungeziefer” (vermin) to describe Samsa. According to the American Heritage Medical Dictionary, vermin refers to any of various small animals or insects, such as rats or cockroaches, that are destructive, annoying, or injurious to health. When someone calls another person a “cockroach” or “vermin,” they are implying that they are a low-life. They are “filthy” and no one wants to be around them. Like cockroaches, their presence is unwanted. They are a nuisance and a plague to the people around them. People despise them and would much rather do without them. They have no place in society and are instead considered harmful to the growth and development of others.

  31. According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, the word vermin is derived from the Middle English Anglo-French, vermine, and was first used the in the 14th century. This word means: a small common harmful or objectable animals that are difficult to control. They are also known to be preyed upon by other mammals or birds. Similarly, the word cockroach is a nocturnal insect that is defined as a pests. I think that these words have a disgusting and unfavorable connotation. They are both things that are not wanted and despised of. These words also are not something that most people want to see or have in their living conditions.

  32. When a certain person is called a “cockroach” or a “vermin," it may mean that this person is disgusting and filthy physically and/or mentally. This person may also act similarly to that of a cockroach or a vermin. This means the person may irritate others since cockroaches and vermin tend to do so. Cockroaches are a burden in people’s households and are many times killed. Likewise, this person may be a burden upon others and is probably disliked thoroughly by these same people.

  33. When someone calls you a cockroach, I means you are a survivor. Cockroaches can allegedly survive a nuclear explosion. “That cockroach made a hole-in-one on the last hole to win the golf tournament.”
